Khammam: Khaki shirts were distributed free of cost to hamalis under the aegis of Nama Muthaiah Trust, set up in memory of Khammam MP Nama Nageswara Rao’s father Nama Muthaiah.
At a programme at Gandhi Chowk market area here on Thursday, TRS leader Maddineni Baby Swarna Kumari along with local corporator Pasumarthi Rammohan Rao distributed khaki shirts to as many as 300 hamalis.
Speaking on the occasion, Kumari said the MP decided to donate the shirts as the hamalis requested him to provide them shirts when he recently attended a programme at Gandhi Chowk.
The MP has been carrying out many charitable works in the memory of his parents, Muthaiah and Varalakshmi, to help people in distress. During Covid lockdown, the trust provided free sanitisers and masks to the public and health facilities, she said.
Khaki shirts were being distributed to porters and auto-rickshaw drivers since 2009 and so far distributed shirts to nearly 65,000 porters and auto-drivers in the erstwhile Khammam district, Kumari informed.
The shirts were sewn by a reputable company depending on the size of the hamalis. Gandhi Chowk Trade Association president and secretary V Venkateswara Rao and Ch Radhakrishna, Nama Seva Samithi president Palvancha Rajesh and others were present.
