Khammam: The official mechanism in erstwhile Khammam was on alert mode with the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday directing district authorities to be cautious following forecast of heavy rains till Oct 14.

Khammam District Collector RV Karnan advised the district officials to closely monitor the situation and told the mandal and special officers not to move from their working headquarters in the wake of the rain forecast.

The officials were told to pay attention to situation in low lying areas and areas where there is possibility of flooding and water-logging due to the rains. Since majority of tanks were at their full tank level (FTL), steps to control any possible breach in the bunds have to be taken, he noted.

In Kothagudem district, mandal level officials were told to be available for public round the clock and control rooms were set up at Bhadrachalam Sub-Collector office, RDO office Kothagudem. Collector MV Reddy held a teleconference with district officials.

The flood protocols issued in the past have to be followed strictly. Vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement on low-level causeways should be stopped as they might be submerged with flood water. Focus should be laid on the villages on the banks of rivers and streams in the district. Arrangements should be made to evacuate people if the situation turns serious, said the Collector. Pregnant women nearing delivery date should be shifted to hospital before hand, Reddy added.

Meanwhile, the weather in erstwhile Khammam remained cloudy on Monday. During the past 24 hours light to moderate rain was witnessed in all the mandals in Khammam and Kothagudem district, which recorded the district average rainfall of 7.3 mm and 7.5 mm respectively.
