Contract workers serving in District Hospital staged a dharna in Khammam on Thursday.
Khammam: The action was sought against a contractor who failed to pay salaries pending for 20 months to contract workers serving in Covid ward at Government District Headquarters Hospital.
A dharna being staged by the contract workers reached its third day on Thursday. Telangana State Municipal Staff and Outsourcing Workers Union (AITUC) State general secretary Manda Venkateshwarlu who took part in the dharna demanded immediate release of the pending salary.
Speaking to media persons, he said the government permitted appointing 45 personnel on a contract basis for patient care, security guards and sweepers during the first lockdown period through a private agency.
But the contractor appointed 106 workers and paid a salary for two months only. Even after 20 months passed the contractor has not paid salary despite repeated requests. As a result, the families of the workers were suffering, Venkateshwarlu said.
The hospital authorities also failed to act against the contractor for delaying the workers’ salary. Concerned officials should immediately act and ensure onetime payment of pending salary to the workers.
He said the AITUC along with the workers, was ready to take legal action on the issue of pending wages of workers if the contractor failed to respond to the issue forthwith.
