Khammam: Four persons died and five others were injured grievously in an accident that took place at Banapuram village in Mudigonda mandal in the district during late night hours of Saturday.
According to police, the incident occurred when a group devotees of Kamalapuram village in the mandal were going to Mutyala village on the banks of river Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh for the immersion of Durga Devi idol on completion of Navaratri pooja.
It was said that around 12 devotees were travelling in a tractor while the Devi idol was carried on another tractor. When they were going for the idol immersion sudden downpour started reducing the visibility on the road and the driver of the tractor in which the devotees were travelling lost control of the vehicle and it fell into a roadside ravine at Vusikavagu killing four persons on the spot.
The deceased were identified as, Avasani Upender (30), B Elagonda Swamy (45), Ch Nagaraju (25) and Mulkalapalli Uma (35) who belong to same community. The injured were shifted to District Government Hospital in Khammam for treatment and condition of five persons was said to be critical.
ZP Chairman, L Kamalraj, TS Seeds Corporation Chairman K Koteshwar Rao and TRS leaders from Mudigonda mandal visited the hospital on Sunday and paid condolences to the grieving family members. Kamalraj said the doctors were asked to give quality treatment to the injured persons.
Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar and MP Nama Nageswara Rao expressed shock over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the deceased persons. They said all possible help would be provided to the affected families.
