Khammam gets respite from rains, crops damaged

Khammam: After two days of heavy rains, erstwhile Khammam remained dry on Tuesday. Of the 21 mandals, only six mandals received light rain during the day while in Kothagudem, of the 17 mandals, Laxmidevi mandal witnessed a light rainfall of 4 mm, officials said.
From Monday 8.30 am to 5 am on Tuesday, very light to heavy rainfall was witnessed in Kothagudem in which Allapalli, Gundala, Burgampad and Aswapuram received heavy rainfall above 6 cm.
For the same period in Khammam, eight mandals received heavy rainfall while the other mandals received moderate to rather heavy rains. Water stagnation troubled residents in several residential colonies in both districts.
Several roads and standing drops on a large extent of land were damaged due to the cyclonic rains in Khammam and Kothagudem district. The electricity department personnel engaged in repairing electric poles and electric distribution lines that were damaged by the rains.
Telangana Rythu Sangham leaders visited several villages in Wyra mandal where crops were damaged. The sangham leader B Rambabu demanded the State and Central governments to provide relief to the affected farmers.
Authorities lifted nine gates of Taliperu medium irrigation project in Cherla in Kothagudem to discharge 10,914 cusecs downstream as the project was receiving inflows of 10,947 cusecs. The present water level in the project with FRL of 74 metres was 72.53 metres, said officials.
