HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday granted regular bail to Perumalla Rajashekar, a doctor practicing at Savita Medical College for allegedly performing kidney transplantation at Alakananda Hospital, Saroornagar without seeking prior permission.

Justice J Sreenivas Rao was dealing with a bail application filed by Rajashekar. The crime stems from allegations that a transplantation was being performed illegally.

According to the complaint, the hospital in question had been opened only seven months prior, and two women from Tamil Nadu had expressed their willingness to donate their kidneys due to financial difficulties.

Two individuals from Karnataka, in need of kidneys, had agreed to pay Rs 55 lakh each to the donors. Subsequently, Dr Sumanth from the hospital authorised the kidney transplantation surgery, which was carried out on January 17, 2025, without informing any relevant authorities or parties.

The counsel for petitioner argued that the petitioner did not commit any offence and was being falsely implicated in the crime. He said the petitioner was arrested on January 27, 2025, and was presently in judicial custody. That other accused persons with serious allegations were already granted bail in the same case, the petitioner’s counsel added.

Whereas the Public Prosecutors representing the State contended that the petitioner conspired with other doctors and performed surgery illegally even after knowing the said act was a grievous offence.

The judge after considering rival submission granted conditional bail, imposing conditions including executing a bail bond of Rs 25,000 with two sureties and directing an appearance before the concerned police station on the 5th day of every month for three months or until the chargesheet is filed.

The judge observed that most of the investigation in the case was already completed and the release of the petitioner would not affect the investigation.
