Hyderabad: The paediatric intensive care teams headed by Dr Nanda Kishore, at KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad and at KIMS Cuddles, Kondapur, headed by D Parag Shankarao Dekate successfully initiated ECMO and saved a 9 month old infant with Covid-19.
Nine month old Shreeyash from Adilabad was brought to KIMS Cuddles, Kondapur with fever, cough and breathing difficulty which progressed rapidly needing ICU admission and ventilator support. As his condition continued to deteriorate, the child developed air leak from lungs (pneumothorax) which made ventilator treatment difficult. At this point ECMO support was initiated there and shifted to KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad for further continuation.
The child came off ECMO after 12 days and off ventilator support after further three days. Now the child is doing well, is on breast feed and no oxygen requirement. He was discharged home after one month of hospital stay, a press release said.
