Hyderabad: A kindergarten student was run over by her school van at Peddamberpet in Hayathnagar on Thursday afternoon.

Rithvika, who was studying in LKG standard at Sri Chaitanya Techno School in Hayathnagar, came home from school in a Mahindra Supro van.

The girl got down from the vehicle and was walking towards her house when she was hit by the vehicle. “The girl fell down on the road and the vehicle ran over her. She sustained serious injuries and died on the spot. Apparently, the driver showed negligence while driving as well as ensuring safety of the student,” said Hayathnagar Inspector, P Nagaraju Goud.

The police on information reached the spot and shifted the body for post-mortem to mortuary. A case is registered against the driver K Ganesh and he was taken into custody.

The police will be referring the vehicle to Road Transport Authority for inspection. The school education department officials also enquired about the incident with the school management and sought a report.

A pall of gloom descended in the colony following the accident. The neighbours and relatives gathered at the house to console the family members. A few of the relatives headed to Osmania Hospital mortuary where the body was moved for postmortem examination.
