The pictures of a lagoon in Argentina’s southern Patagonia region which has turned bright pink are going viral. The frightful phenomenon is the result of pollution by a chemical used to preserve prawns for export, say experts and activists.
The colour is caused by sodium sulfite, an anti-bacterial product used in fish factories, whose waste is blamed for contaminating the Chubut River that feeds the Corfo lagoon and other water sources in the region, according to activists.
The lagoon, which is not used for recreation, receives runoff from the Trelew industrial park and has turned the colour of fuchsia before.
The residents nearby the lagoon are also fed up with the frightening colouring pollution as it also leads to foul smell in the area.
