Warangal Urban: With the construction of a spacious and splendid edifice for the administrative office of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), the historic Warangal city has got another iconic structure. This five-storey modern building with all the required facilities was constructed with a plinth area of 70,000 square feet (sft) at a cost of Rs 25 crore on a five-acre site on the premises of erstwhile Warangal Central Prison.

“Foundation stone for the construction of this modern building was laid on August 7, 2016, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Telangana State Medical Services & Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSMSIDC) executed the construction work. Bronze statue of the late poet ‘Prajakavi’ Kaloji Narayana Rao and sculptures of medical luminaries of the world will be the main attraction at this edifice,” said KNRUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr B Karunakar Reddy.

KNRUHS Registrar Dr Devulapally Praveen Kumar and his family members installed the statue of Kaloji at a cost of Rs 7 lakh in memory of Praveen Kumar’s father Gopal Kishan Rao since they are close relatives of Kaloji. The seven-and-a-half-feet tall statue weighs 450 kg and it was made by noted sculptor Devagupthapu Rajkumar Udayar from East Godavari of Andhra Pradesh.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao unveiled the statue and also inaugurated the modern building here on Monday.

The sculptures of medical luminaries including Sushruta, Charaka, Hygia, Vagbhata, Asclepius and Hippocrates were carved on the wall at the main hall of the building. Dr Manjula and Dr C Sharath Babu donated money for these sculptures, according to varsity officials.
It may be recalled here that State medical colleges affiliated to the NTR University were disaffiliated and were brought under the jurisdiction of the KNRUHS after State formation.

“At the time of State formation, there were 20 medical colleges, 12 dental, 11 AYUSH colleges, 18 physiotherapy, 23 lab technician and 80 nursing colleges in Telangana. Now, there are 33 medical colleges, 13 dental, 22 physiotherapy, 20 lab technician and 85 nursing colleges in Telangana. Number of MBBS seats has also gone up from 2,600 to 5,165. PG seats have gone up from 1,222 to 2,044. In the past, the combined strength of all the courses was 11,561 seats, which is now 17,348. All this shows the commitment of the government towards public health system in the State,” Dr Karunakar Reddy added.
