Kothagudem: The District Bar Association members have staged a protest at the district court here on Thursday against alleged manhandling of an advocate by police in Hyderabad recently.

The association president Lakkineni Satyanarayana, vice president Thota Malleshwar Rao, secretary MSR Ravichandra and sports secretary Dudipala Ravikumar along with the association members displaying placards shouted slogans demanding action against Madannapet SHO.

It was said that the advocate in question, Mohammed Abdul Kaleem, practicing as a lawyer in the city civil court in Hyderabad, was assaulted and abused using filthy language by the station house officer (SHO) of Madannapet police station.

He was said to have been targetted for defending the local beneficiaries of double bedroom houses. The houses which were previously allocated to the beneficiaries were now being re-allotted to the residents displaced by the Congress government’s Musi River Front Project, which ran into controversy as the locals opposed the project.

The association leaders expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of police assaulting advocates in the State. They demanded the government to enact the Advocate Protection Act forthwith.
