Kothagudem: Posing as an ACB official, an unidentified man allegedly extorted money from the Tekulapally tahsildar in the district.
In the incident that came to light late, the tahsildar Muthaiah was forced to pay Rs 98,000 to the extortionist. It was said that the tahsildar received a phone call on Saturday from an unidentified person stating that the revenue inspector Rathaiah working at the tahsildar office was caught in a corruption case by ACB.
The caller demanded the tahsildar to pay Rs.2 lakh for not implicating him in the case. The caller also made the revenue inspector speak to the tahsildar in a conference call and tell the tahsildar that ACB officials were with him.
Then the tahsildar sent Rs 50,000 to the miscreant through UPI payment to the phone number given to him. After sometime the miscreant again called the tahsildar demanding an additional amount and Muthaiah paid Rs.48, 000 to the caller.
Later, the tahsildar came to his senses; called the revenue inspector to enquire about the said ACB raid. Then Rathaiah told the tahsildar that he was not aware of any ACB raid; he also had received a call from an unknown person and the caller had coerced him to tell the tahsildar that he was caught by ACB officials.
When the media contacted Muthaiah, he claimed that he was about to retire from the services by the end of May month. The money was paid to avoid unnecessary trouble at the time of the retirement and the caller confused them to extort money. A complaint was lodged with the local police in connection with the incident.
