Kothagudem: Nava Bharat Eye Centre established by Nava Limited at Paloncha has been proving to be a boon to the rural poor as it has performed over 25, 000 eye surgeries free of cost in the past 14 years.

With an intention to provide quality eye care services to the public in the district Nava Limited established the eye centre on February 19, 2011 as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative. It has been managed by a leading eye institute, LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad.

Nava Limited vice president and unit head Rear Admiral LV Sarath Babu (veteran) informed that the eye centre’s 14th foundation day was celebrated. During the past fourteen years Nava Bharat Eye Centre provided eye care to as many as 9,33,763 people.

Around 50,200 patients underwent surgeries and of them 50 percent (25, 100) surgeries have been successfully done free of cost. It was an impressive achievement to provide eye treatment to more than nine lakh people in rural and agency areas in such a short time, he said.

To extend ophthalmology services to remote villages 10 sub-centres, connected with the main centre, have been established across the erstwhile Khammam district. The sub-centres are located at Dammapeta, Tekulapalli, Sujatha Nagar, Cherla, Tallada, Yellandu, Manugur, Aswapuram, Chandrugonda and Julurupadu.

The main centre and the sub-centres are manned by 70 eye care professionals. Eye care services like oculoplasty, retina, cornea, glaucoma and paediatric are being offered to the patients at the main centre while basic eye care is being provided at sub-centres, Sarath Babu informed.
