Kothagudem: The Singareni Collieries Company Limited‘s (SCCL) underground and opencast mines lagged behind in reaching their coal production targets with only 90 percent of the overall half yearly production target being achieved.

In the last six months, from April to September 30, the coal production was 2,84,49,547 tonnes as against the target of 3,15,89,100 tonnes. Coal produced for the corresponding period last year was 3,13,18,052 tonnes. The fall in production has been attributed to heavy rains and other reasons. Of the 11 areas of SCCL, only the RG-2 and Yellandu areas exceeded the half yearly production targets by producing 19,93,130 tonnes (target-16,97,000 tonnes) and 39,34,487 tonnes (target-36,11,300 tonnes) respectively. The production target set for the current financial year was 72 million tonnes.

In terms of overall monthly production, only 72 percent of the target set for September was achieved. Yellandu and Kothagudem areas fared better as the former exceeded the target with 123 percent and the latter with 87 percent production. Ongoing repairs in GDK-11 incline and the PVK-5 incline lack of supply of spare parts for machines in time, besides heavy rains were said to be the reason for not reaching the production target in Kothagudem area in September. In September, coal produced in Manugur and Mandamarri areas was 62 percent of the target, Bellampalli 49 percent, Srirampur 61 percent, RG-1 82 percent, RG-2 59 percent, RG-3 84 percent, Adriyala longwall project 76 percent and Bhupallpally 59 percent, officials said.

However, except Bhupalpally, all other areas fared better in terms of reaching half yearly production target though the coal production was less than the set target as the production ranged in between 71 to 94 percent. SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N Balram held a review meeting with senior officials a few days ago and directed them to take steps to produce at least two lakh tonnes of coal and transport the same on a daily basis. He also asked the officials to ensure removal of 14 lakh overburden every day. Stepping up coal production was essential to achieve the current financial year target of 72 million tonnes, he added.
