KT Rama Rao greets Cardinal Poola Anthony on his birthday
KT Rama Rao extended birthday greetings to Cardinal Poola Anthony, India’s first Dalit and first Telugu Cardinal, recalling his services and spiritual journey. The Cardinal, now Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad, continues to hold key responsibilities and privileges in the Church

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Saturday extended birthday greetings to Cardinal Poola Anthony, India’s first Dalit and first Telugu Cardinal, by personally calling him on the occasion. During the conversation, Rama Rao recalled the Cardinal’s services and achievements as a religious leader. Cardinal Poola Anthony’s appointment is regarded as a milestone in India’s Christian community.
He was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope Francis on August 27, 2022. He became the first Dalit and the first Telugu individual to attain this prestigious position in the country. Reflecting on his spiritual journey, Rama Rao said he served as a pastor in the Kadapa Diocese before being ordained as a bishop.
From 2008 to 2020, he rendered distinguished service as the Bishop of Kurnool. Since 2021, he has been discharging his responsibilities as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad. As a Cardinal, Poola Anthony enjoys special privileges, including the right to vote in the Conclave process for electing a future Pope.
On behalf of Rama Rao, senior BRS leader Rajeev Sagar met the Cardinal in person, presented a bouquet of flowers and conveyed the birthday wishes.
