Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao accused the Congress and BJP of compromising Telangana’s interests by prostrating before their respective Delhi leaderships and mortgaging the State’s self-respect for their posts. He also warned Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy against selling valuable government lands in Hyderabad, particularly the 550 acres in Miyapur.
Instead, he challenged the Chief Minister to honour his election promise of allotting 250 square yards and provide house sites to the families of Telangana martyrs and Telangana movement activists from the Miyapur land. “Portions could also be used to build houses for the urban poor, schools, colleges and parks,” he remarked while addressing Congress leaders from Serilingampally who joined the BRS at Telangana Bhavan on Wednesday.
Referring to the Supreme Court verdict on the 550 acres, Rama Rao questioned the haste with which Revanth Reddy announced plans to sell the land even before the court order was formally received. “If Revanth Reddy is sincere about his promises, why should he sell the land instead of using it for public purposes?” he asked.
He accused the Congress government of attempting to dispose of nearly 10,000 acres in 21 industrial estates under the Hyderabad Industrial Land Transformation (HILT) policy. Citing the closed Aluminium Industries unit in Serilingampally, he said land originally allotted at concessional rates to promote industries was now being offered for commercial development. Such land should be reclaimed if the industries for which it was allotted ceased operations, he said.
The former Minister said the Congress government was selling public assets instead of using them for housing and civic infrastructure. Questioning the proposed sale of Housing Board properties and the truck parking facility, he pointed out that Hyderabad lacked land for parks, water tanks, bus depots and even burial grounds.
He accused the government of demolishing houses belonging to poor people under HYDRAA while sparing properties belonging to ruling party leaders and their relatives. He also alleged that the HILT policy and enforcement actions were being used to intimidate builders and extort money.
Targeting both the Congress and the BJP, Rama Rao said their leaders displayed excessive deference to their high commands in Delhi. Referring to an incident involving Revanth Reddy and the security personnel accompanying Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, he said it was humiliating for a Chief Minister to be pushed aside by security staff.
He criticised Union Minister Bandi Sanjay for allegedly behaving like a security guard while accompanying Union Home Minister Amit Shah and questioned Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao for touching Shah’s feet despite being older than him.
“Congress carries bags for Delhi leaders, while the BJP carries their footwear,” the BRS working president remarked, asserting that both parties were alike in safeguarding neither Telangana’s dignity nor its interests. He questioned what Amit Shah had delivered to the State during his visit, asking whether the Centre had sanctioned a Metro project, a national project or a major educational institution.
Describing Revanth Reddy as an EMI Chief Minister, he alleged that his frequent visits to Delhi were aimed at protecting his political position rather than securing benefits for Telangana.
Rama Rao accused the Congress government of neglecting irrigation and power infrastructure. He said the previous BRS government had built the Kaleshwaram and Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Schemes to meet Hyderabad’s water needs, but the present government had failed to utilise the available Godavari and Krishna river waters.
He recalled that the BRS government had expanded power generation capacity from around 7,000 MW to 20,000 MW, but alleged that the Congress government was failing to ensure reliable supply despite the availability of Singareni coal.
Cautioning voters against trusting either national party again, Rama Rao said Telangana risked losing its resources and assets to Delhi or Gujarat. He called upon people to safeguard the State’s interests under the leadership of K Chandrashekhar Rao.
