Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao has opposed the proposal to establish an open-cast coal mine near the historic Ramappa temple in Mulugu district, cautioning that mining and blasting could pose a serious threat to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the adjoining Ramappa lake.
Reacting to media reports, Rama Rao said the Congress government was willing to put heritage structures at risk in the process of extracting mineral wealth. He said excavation and blasting at considerable depths near the temple could endanger the Ramappa temple, regarded as an icon of Telangana’s architectural heritage, as well as the Ramappa lake.
The BRS working president said the party would oppose any move that could damage the heritage site and demanded that the proposed open-cast coal mine be withdrawn immediately. He warned that the party would launch a large-scale agitation if the proposal was not withdrawn.
