Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Tuesday distributed 5,000 KCR Kits to new mothers at Telangana Bhavan as part of his “Gift a Smile” initiative, ahead of his birthday on July 24. The move marked a symbolic revival of the BRS government’s flagship maternal welfare scheme.
Stating that the Congress government had wilfully shelved the programme, Rama Rao said the KCR Kits scheme had significantly boosted institutional deliveries and helped reduce maternal and infant mortality across Telangana.
He said that the Revanth Reddy-led government had halted distribution of the kits purely to deny political credit to former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. “Countless mothers have suffered for the last 20 months as the Revanth government refuses to distribute kits that transformed public healthcare,” he said.
Recalling the healthcare scenario before statehood, Rama Rao said that people once avoided government hospitals out of fear. “KCR Kits changed the face of government hospitals. Yet, today they are withheld out of endless hatred and anger towards KCR,” he remarked.
He condemned the Congress government’s “vindictive governance” for prioritising politics over public welfare, and stated that denying the kits was not harming the former Chief Minister, but mothers and newborns.
“Hence, I decided to distribute KCR Kits and support some families as part of the ‘Gift a Smile’ initiative,” he said.
