Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao said the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes, launched by former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, had supported 16.78 lakh poor families with financial assistance totalling Rs 16,375 crore over 12 years.
Recalling the circumstances that led to the scheme’s launch, Rama Rao said Chandrashekhar Rao was moved by the plight of tribal father Banothu Keemanayak, who lost the savings set aside for his daughter’s marriage. The incident prompted the BRS chief to extend support to families across Telangana facing the financial burden of marrying off their daughters, he said.
He termed the scheme as a measure of dignity for girls and relief for their parents, adding that Chandrashekhar Rao had stood by lakhs of families like a father figure. The assistance of Rs 1,00,116 was intended to ease marriage expenses for poor households, he said.
The BRS working president said it had reduced the financial burden on parents and helped curb child marriages. He slammed the Congress government for weakening the scheme and accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of attempting to discontinue it. He also recalled the Congress promise of providing one tola of gold along with Kalyana Lakshmi assistance, alleging that the commitment remained unfulfilled.
