Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao paid rich tributes to social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule during his birth anniversary celebrations held at Telangana Bhavan on Friday. He recalled Phule’s significant contributions to social justice, education, and women’s empowerment.

Speaking on the occasion, Rama Rao said the K Chandrashekhar Rao government in Telangana has walked in the footsteps of Phule by prioritising education for the marginalised. He remembered the spirit of Phule, the BRS government established a large number of Gurukul schools and introduced scholarships for overseas education. Around 7,000 students have received world-class education under this initiative, he said.

He also stated that the government honoured Phule by naming BC residential institutions after him and also providing scholarships to BC students, promoting higher education opportunities for students from backward classes.

In a separate statement, former Minister T Harish Rao hailed Phule as a beacon of social reform, particularly in his fight against caste and gender discrimination. “His vision of equality, education and rights protection formed the foundation of the BRS government’s nine-and-a-half years in power,” he said.

Harish Rao said schemes like Kalyana Lakshmi/Shaadi Mubarak, initiatives for young women’s welfare, efforts to curb child marriage, and foreign education support for students from weaker sections were all inspired by Phule. “Let us honour Phule’s ideals by continuing the fight for social justice,” he added.
