Hyderabad: IT Minister KT Rama Rao on Saturday inaugurated the state-of-the-art free palliative care facility Sparsh Hospice at Khajaguda. Spread over 60,000 square feet, the facility has been developed at a cost of Rs 15 crore. The over one acre land for the facility was allocated by the State government. In 2017, the IT Minister had laid the foundation stone for the construction of the facility, which earlier was located at Banjara Hills.

“When I first visited Sparsh Hospice in 2014, I didn’t know anything about palliative care. Later, I came to know so much about it and it is a great service to humanity. The Government of Telangana is actively considering entering palliative care with partnership from private institutions,” Rama Rao said.


Responding to the requests made on behalf of Sparsh Hospice, Rama Rao promised to exempt the facility from municipal and water tax.

The funds for the building were raised through donations from individuals and corporates. It will provide free palliative care to terminally ill cancer patients. The Sparsh Hospice will serve 82 patients, 150 home care patients and another 50 outpatients.

In addition to cancer wards, the facility also has wards for patients suffering from dementia, Parkinson’s, Geriatric etc. It is equipped with pediatric palliative care, physiotherapy, library, gym, lounge, nursing dormitory, doctors’ residence and exclusive Pharmacy and mortuary.

Dr Mahesh Kotbagi, Director, Rotary International, Varaprasad Reddy, Shantha Biotechnics founder-president, Vikas Ranka, president of Rotary Club, Banjara Hills, Dr M Subrahmanyam, Suresh Reddy, Jagadish Ramadugu, trustees, Ram Mohan Rao Yarrapothu, CEO of Sparsh Hospice, Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Mahender Reddy, former DGP, Krishna Yedula, SCSC Secretary, and others were present.
