Hyderabad: Responding to a complaint of medical negligence and exorbitant billing by a private hospital, lodged by the son of a Covid-19 victim, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao on Friday asked health officials to take severe action against the hospital if the allegations were found to be true.

Sumanth Saadam, a Twitter user, had tweeted to the Minister, saying that his father passed away due to the negligence of Raghavendra Hospital, Bowenpally. He said the hospital had ‘tortured them for money’ and even asked relatives to take away his father even when he was in a critical condition.

The Minister first requested Director of Public Health Dr G Srinivasa Rao and the Health Secretary to initiate action, and when the DPH responded saying a show cause notice was issued, Rao further asked him to take severe action if the accusations were found true.

The show cause notice served asks the hospital to explain the discrepancy in billing rates and treatment protocol and to submit a detailed explanation within 24 hours, failing which actions including immediate suspension of Covid-19 treatment services would be taken.

The Minister also asked the DPH to investigate allegations against Virinchi Hospital following complaints lodged by relatives of a Covid-19 victim.
