Khammam: The stage is set for the inauguration of the city’s newest attraction, a cable-stayed suspension bridge built across Lakaram tank in Khammam city.
IT, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao is scheduled to throw open the bridge to the public during his visit to the district on January 2.
The bridge construction was taken up at a cost of Rs 8 crore by Telangana Tourism Development Department with municipal funds a few months ago following the initiative by Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar
It has been designed on the lines of suspension bridges at Laknavaram in erstwhile Warangal district, Komati Cheruvu in Siddipet district and Durgam Cheruvu in Hyderabad to help Khammam citizens unwind in a pleasant atmosphere.
The bridge pathway/deck suspended by strong ropes running from the deck level to the main cables are supported by two 80 feet tall towers on either side of the tank bund. The main and suspender cables were procured from a company in South Korea.
The single-span suspension bridge is 120 metres in length and 1.5 metres in width. “The suspension bridge will be an added attraction at Lakaram tank bund and it will give a great boost to Khammam city’s tourism potential” Ajay Kumar told Telangana Today.
A musical fountain is also coming up at Lakaram tank for the citizens to enjoy. Facilities like open gym, walking track, rope cycling and parks have already been developed at the tank bund to help citizens keep fit and relax.
According to officials, Rama Rao accompanied by Ministers Ajay Kumar and Satyavathi Rathod, will also lay the foundation stone of Tribal Welfare Residential School at Raghunathapalem and for a sewerage treatment plant at Prakash Nagar. He will also inaugurate a Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) at Danavaigudem, distribute land pattas to poor and chair a review meeting on development works at the collectorate.
District Collector VP Gautham held a meeting with the district officials to review the arrangements for the Minister’s visit. He told the officials to be prepared with reports related to progress of works in their respective departments.
