Hyderabad: BRS working president and former Minister KT Rama Rao has been selected for the prestigious Green Leadership Award 2025, an international honour that will be conferred at the 9th NYC Green School Conference on September 24 in New York.
The organisers, Green Mentors, formally confirmed the award in an official communication, acknowledging Rama Rao’s role in spearheading sustainable governance and environmental initiatives in Telangana. “On behalf of Green Mentors, it is a privilege to confirm your selection as the recipient of the Green Leadership Award 2025,” the letter stated.
During his tenure as Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, Rama Rao led an ambitious urban greening drive that transformed Hyderabad into a global model. Initiatives included the development of 977 parks by GHMC, creation of 108 lung spaces and theme parks, along with rain gardens, vertical gardens, and large-scale institutional and avenue plantations, which significantly enhanced Telangana’s green footprint.
Telangana’s green cover increased from 24 per cent to 33 per cent during the tenure of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, positioning the State as a frontrunner in ecological conservation. Hyderabad went on to win the World Green Cities Award and became the only Indian city recognised as a Tree City of the World by the FAO and Arbor Day Foundation.
