Hyderabad: The Jawaharnagar police arrested a lab technician on charges of cheating a family by giving them a fake Covid positive (RT-PCR) test result report here on Friday.
The arrested person was S Kiran Kumar (26), a resident of HMT Nagar in Nacharam of Uppal mandal. According to the police, Sunil Kumar, a pet shop owner from Dammaiguda in Keesara, along with his family members had Covid-19 symptoms last month and called Kiran, whom he knew for nearly six years, for an RT-PCR test.
According to the police, Kiran went to Sunil’s house and collected samples of him and his family members. In the first week of May, Kiran gave reports from a private lab saying Sunil was positive while his family members were negative.
“As Sunil’s wife and children still showed symptoms, he called Kiran again for a test. Kiran again collected samples for which he was paid Rs.7,500,” police said, adding that Sunil and his family believing the result to be true went into home quarantine till mid-May. In the last week of May, they got tests done and Kiran sent Covid negative reports to them. For this, he took Rs 1,000 per person.
The cheating came to light when Sunil recently called the private lab regarding the tests.
“The lab staff said his samples were not sent to them. It was revealed that Kiran had sent fake reports,” police said, adding that he had taken Rs.18,500 for the tests. A case of cheating and under the Disaster Management act was booked and Kiran was arrested.
