Land issues stall construction of Young India Residential Schools in Telangana

Land-related issues, pending approvals and court cases have delayed the construction of Young India Residential Schools in six Telangana constituencies. While 85 schools have received administrative approval, construction has commenced at 64 locations, with several other projects awaiting clearances or suitable land.

Hyderabad: The construction of Young India Integrated Residential Schools, a flagship project of the Telangana Congress government, has hit a roadblock due to land issues. The establishment of these schools in six assembly constituencies has been stuck for some time due to land acquisition that has become a major obstacle.

While the sites have already been identified, the proposed sites are facing several issues, including delays in issuing no-objection certificates and pending court cases.

For example, land has been identified in Wardhannapet. However, it is learnt that the Irrigation Department approval is pending. Similarly, a land parcel identified in Chandrayangutta assembly constituency in Hyderabad is awaiting the Heritage Department approval.

In some constituencies, suitability of land allocated for the project has become a hurdle. For instance, land allotted for the school establishment in Survey No 867 in Bandameedipally in Mahabubnagar district reportedly turned out to be assigned land. A site allotted in Miryalaguda was found unsuitable for the school, and an alternative site has been sought that is yet to materialise.

In another case, land is allotted in Narsampet, and title documents are also issued. However, the site has not been physically handed over even though the issue was taken up by Collector. In Illandu constituency, the project could not take off due to a pending court case related to the land that was allotted to the school.

The government decided to establish Young India Residential Schools in 105 assembly constituencies across the State. It accorded administrative approval for 85 schools, and permissions for another 20 constituencies are pending.

Of the total approved, tenders have already been invited for 81 schools, and 78 were finalised. Technical evaluation is underway for three more tenders, while tenders for the remaining four schools are yet to be called. Among the 78 finalised tenders, construction work commenced at 64 locations. At another nine locations, the process of releasing mobilisation advances to contractors is underway.
