Hyderabad: In a celebration of resilience and national pride, a group of 80 laryngectomy survivors came together to perform a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, during the Republic Day celebrations at Hyderabad-based Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH&RI), Hyderabad, on Monday and received certification from World Book of Records, London.

The unique milestone is the first of its kind, showcasing the determination of individuals who have reclaimed their voices after life-altering surgery. The performance was made possible through advanced voice rehabilitation techniques, including the use of electrolarynx devices and tracheoesophageal voice prostheses (TEP).

For these survivors, whose natural voice boxes were removed to treat advanced laryngeal cancer, singing the anthem was both a technical triumph and a deeply emotional experience.

Laryngeal cancer remains a significant health concern in India, particularly among men, where it accounts for 3–6 per cent of all cancer cases. While the surgery required to treat advanced cases can be daunting due to the loss of natural speech, BIACH&RI’s Head and Neck Oncology Department emphasises that recovery is possible.

Through their Laryngectomy Rehabilitation Club, the hospital provides essential peer support, speech therapy, and counseling, helping patients navigate the physical and emotional challenges of their journey.

The Hospital Chairman, Nandamuri Balakrishna and other senior medical experts, including cancer specialist Dr Nori Dattatreya, who was named as a Padma Shri recipient, were present.
