Lightning claims lives of woman, toddler in Mancherial

Mancherial: In a tragic incident, a woman and her one-year old son died on the spot, while her husband received injuries after being struck by lightning here on Monday.

Mancherial police and an eyewitness Akireddy Chandraiah said that the deceased were Ande Mounika (28), and her son Shriyan alias Viswateja, residents of Gaddampalli hamlet in Sundilla village in Manthani mandal of Peddapalli district. The injured was her husband P Venkateshwar, a cab driver.

Mounika and son Shriyan were killed on the spot when the lighting struck them while they were traveling on the motorcycle with Venkateshwar on a Road Over Bridge (ROB) in the town. Venkateshwar sustained serious injuries and was shifted to Mancherial district headquarters hospital and his condition is said to be critical.

The family was on the way to their native place after visiting a private hospital in the district headquarters where Shriyan was taken for treatment of his fever. It is learnt that the doctor of the hospital insisted the couple admit the toddler, but they wanted to take the child to their home.

Incidentally, Mancherial town registered a brief spell of showers on Monday. Nennal mandal received over 65 mm of rainfall, while Bheemini, Kannepalli, Vemanapalli, Jaipur, Hajipur, Vemanapalli, Naspur saw moderate rainfall, ranging from 15.6 mm to 64.4 mm of rainfall. Hilly streams swelled. Standing cotton, soya and maize crops were damaged due to the downpours.
