Lionel Messi shines as Inter Miami cruises to 4-0 victory over Nashville in MLS Playoffs
Lionel Messi’s two goals and two assists led Inter Miami to a dominant 4-0 win over Nashville in the MLS playoffs, sending them to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Inter Miami will face FC Cincinnati next in a single-elimination match
Fort Lauderdale: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are now just three wins away from an MLS Cup title after the Argentine superstar delivered a masterclass in a dominant 4-0 victory over Nashville SC in Game 3 of their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series. Messi’s two goals and two assists propelled Inter Miami into the semifinals, marking the club’s furthest playoff run in history.
The third-seeded Inter Miami dominated sixth-seeded Nashville, outscoring them 8-3 across the three games. Messi was directly involved in every single goal, scoring five and assisting on three. The performance also highlighted Messi’s consistent brilliance, making him the overwhelming favorite to win his second consecutive MLS MVP award. If he claims the honor, Messi would become the first player in MLS history to win back-to-back MVPs.
Messi’s Clinical Performance
Messi opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a stunning shot from the top of the 18-yard box, a difficult finish despite being surrounded by four Nashville defenders. The two-time World Cup winner doubled his tally in the 39th minute, tapping in from close range after a superb assist from Mateo Silvetti, who controlled a long pass and laid the ball off for Messi to score into an open net.
In the second half, Messi set up Tadeo Allende for two goals within three minutes, both of which came from well-timed assists that reflected Messi’s vision and creativity. Allende’s brace sealed the comprehensive 4-0 win, ensuring Inter Miami’s safe passage into the Eastern Conference semifinals.
“Messi was incredible,” said Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano. “The whole team played a near-perfect game, from defense to midfield to attack. We’re in a great position now.”
Record-Setting MLS Playoffs for Inter Miami
This victory marks a historic achievement for Inter Miami, as it’s the furthest the club has ever reached in the MLS playoffs. In the club’s previous playoff appearance, they were knocked out in the first round by Atlanta United. But with Messi leading the way, this season is shaping up to be a different story.
The Road Ahead: FC Cincinnati
Inter Miami will now face FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference semifinals, set for Nov. 22 or Nov. 23. Cincinnati, who finished top of the Eastern Conference this season, holds a 1-0-1 advantage over Inter Miami in their regular-season meetings. Cincinnati won 3-0 at home in July, while the teams played to a 0-0 draw in Fort Lauderdale. Messi played in the first match but missed the second encounter.
“We know Cincinnati will be a tough test,” said Jordi Alba, Inter Miami’s veteran defender, who made his 100th appearance for the club in the win over Nashville. “But we’re ready for the challenge.”
Messi’s Dominance in MLS
Messi’s contribution in this playoff series was once again a demonstration of his brilliance. In the regular season, he won the MLS Golden Boot as the league’s leading scorer and has now firmly put Inter Miami in title contention. His ability to perform under pressure in crucial games, like the 4-0 win over Nashville, underscores his status as one of the greatest players of all time.
A Perfect Team Effort
Inter Miami’s victory was not just about Messi, however. Despite Nashville’s strong challenge in the second half, including a disallowed goal by Sam Surridge, Inter Miami held firm defensively and in midfield. The team’s record of 19-2-3 when scoring at least two goals this season speaks to their attacking depth and defensive resilience.
MLS Cup Outlook
Inter Miami’s semifinal against FC Cincinnati will be a single-elimination match, with the winner progressing to the Eastern Conference final. The other semifinal will feature top-seeded Philadelphia Union against fifth-seeded NYCFC. The MLS Cup final is scheduled for Dec. 6, and if any of the remaining teams in the East – Inter Miami, Philadelphia, or Cincinnati – reach the title game, they would have home-field advantage.
With Messi in sensational form, Inter Miami’s MLS Cup aspirations are well and truly alive.
