Hyderabad: Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy on Tuesday said that the responsibility of maintenance of government schools and Anganwadi centres in villages was entrusted to respective Gram Panchayats, while those in urban areas were being maintained by municipalities and municipal corporations.

The government conducted a special meeting with Municipal Administration and Urban Development and Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Departments to ensure proper coordination, she said during question hour in the Legislative Assembly here.

Towards the maintenance of 26,000 government schools in the State, the government has been releasing funds in the form of grants for the last three years. Accordingly, Rs 38 crore was released in 2017-18, Rs 49 crore in 2018-19, Rs 46 crore in 2019-20, Rs 80 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 80 crore for the year 2021-22, she informed.

Regarding the appointment of Vidya Volunteers, the Minister said that in some schools, the teacher-student ratio was not being maintained. “Rationalisation is under progress to identify such schools. Based on the outcome of this exercise, the possibility of appointing Vidya Volunteers will be explored,” she said.

On the development of Palle Prakruthi Vanams in school grounds in some areas, the Minister said the idea was to make good use of available land. In some areas, government schools own lands spread over 10 to 20 acres. In such cases, District Collectors were instructed to develop Palle Prakruthi Vanams. These parks will also provide a good environment for children, she explained.
