Losses in farming drive woman farmer to die by suicide in Mancherial
A 35-year-old tenant farmer from Mancherial district died by suicide after suffering heavy losses in paddy and cotton cultivation on leased land. Police said she was distressed over mounting debts following poor yields due to adverse weather conditions.
Mancherial: A 35-year-old woman tenant farmer died by suicide at Kothavaripet village in Kasipet mandal on Saturday, reportedly distressed over her inability to repay mounting loans after suffering heavy losses in farming. The incident came to light on Sunday.
Police said Gunda Sridevi took the extreme step as she was disheartened by losses caused by unfavourable climatic conditions. She had cultivated paddy on four acres and cotton on eight acres, all leased from local landowners through loans, but a sharp fall in yield left her with heavy losses. The total loan amount is yet to be ascertained.
