Hyderabad: Over the past few years, live music scene in the city has been on a steady rise with several bands popping up. One thing that is common in almost all of these bands is that they perform their versions of popular songs and attempting to change that is The Maahaa Project, a new band in the city. While they do cover popular songs, they also strive to add a dash of hip-hop and electronic music to their versions. According to Mahadeva Sastry of the band, they also focus on performing original tracks.
Sastry, a Hyderabadi rapper who goes by the name Maahaa, is known for catchy original tracks with quirky visuals and over the years, has carved a name for himself in the independent music scene of the city.
“I was creating music videos by myself and while I always collaborated with other musicians, we never really teamed up. With the growth in live music in the city, we wanted to start our own band,” says Maahaa, adding, “Guitarist Baidurjya Banerjee and I were friends from college. Our music producer Shashank and I had worked together on other projects before and the band’s singer Junaid Kumar teamed up with us in February this year. That’s how the band formed.”
The four, involved in music production for years, set out with the goal of giving a unique experience to audiences. “There are tens of bands in the city but what sets us apart is the electronic music that we add to our versions of popular songs. We give out DJ-style music in our live performances with a dash of hip-hop that complements the song,” shares Maahaa, adding that they are a band that is into new-age electronic music with old-school storytelling.
Additionally, the band performs their original tracks in their concerts and according to Maahaa, they got a good response. “We started off performing two cover songs and one original song and we got a good response for our originals too. We see this as a positive change as this motivates us to come up with more original tracks,” he explains.
The band is currently working on an original music video to be released in a month.
