Mahaububabad: An eight-member gang led by a pastor was arrested for their alleged involvement in chain-snatching incidents in Mahabubabad district on Wednesday.
The Central Crime Station (CCS) police along with Thorrur police nabbed the gang on the outskirts of Thorrur town and recovered 30.25 tolas of gold ornaments and four motorcycles worth Rs 18 lakh from them.
The arrested have been identified as Bantu Jayaraju (40) od Sitaramapuram village of Marripeda mandal, who is a pastor and also the gang leader, P Anil, B Rajesh, P Layvardhan, Ch Saikiran, B Pramod Kumar, B Vinayraju, and M Srinivas. All of them belonged to the different villages of Marripeda mandal, said SP N Koti Reddy at a press meet held here on Wednesday.
“The gang members used to conduct recce in villages in the guise of health department staff carrying out a survey on vaccine administration, and identify women living alone or elderly ones. They come the next day and snatch the gold chains or Mangala Sutrams from them,” the SP said explaining the modus operandi of this gang that was involved in 13 chain-snatching cases in Khammam and Surpapet districts too.
The SP congratulated CCS Inspector A Venkateshwar Rao, Thorrur CI Karunakar Rao, and other team members for apprehending the gang.
