Mahabubnagar gears up to plant record 2 cr seed balls this year

Mahabubnagar: The District administration is making all efforts to break its own record by preparing two crore seed balls this year under Haritha Haram programme. Last year, as part of Haritha Haram programme, the district administration had prepared 1.18 crore seed balls involving different women SHGs.
District Collector S Venkat Rao said an action plan was already in place to prepare two crore seed balls and break the previous record registered under Wonder Book of World Records. Addressing officials at a virtual meeting to discuss plans for Haritha Haram programme, Venkat Rao said this year, the task to prepare the seed balls was entrusted to SERP, MEPMA and Gram Panchayats. Training sessions will commence at mandal level from Monday, he said.
While gram panchayats with vast jurisdiction have been asked to prepare 5,000 seed balls, medium sized panchayats were given a target of 3,000 and those with population of less than 300 will make 2,000 seed balls. The DRDA will make 1.70 lakh seed balls and MEPMA 30 lakh seed balls. Tahsildars should identify lands for seed ball plantations, he directed.
Focus should be on preparing custard apples and other local species plants seed balls, he said, and instructed officials to furnish daily seed ball preparation details in a pro forma, beginning June 15. In case of any sapling, planted on the road sides last year, failed to grow, new saplings should be planted at the same location. Emphasis should be on ensuring greenery along the National Highways, State Highways and other important roads, he said.
The task to take up planting on road sides from June 12 is entrusted to Tahsildars, MPDOs and Forest Department officials. The Collector directed officials to come up with action plans for digging 30 lakh pits for plantations and wanted the same to be submitted by Saturday evening.
Over two lakh saplings will have to be planted on the Palamuru university premises and one lakh saplings on the Government Medical College premises. Services of NREGA workers should be used to take up plantations under Haritha Haram programme, he said adding that from Wednesday, Haritha Haram programme works taken up in three to four mandals will be reviewed every day.
