Maharashtra RTOs issue notices to 331 auto, taxi drivers over Marathi proficiency
RTOs across Maharashtra issued notices to 331 autorickshaw and taxi drivers for failing to demonstrate working knowledge of Marathi. The latest checks covered 4,807 drivers, taking the statewide total to 35,190 vehicles inspected and 4,729 notices issued since August 20
Mumbai: Regional transport offices across Maharashtra on Monday issued notices to 331 autorickshaw and taxi drivers, including 139 in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), for failing to demonstrate working knowledge of Marathi, officials said.
As part of the statewide drive that started on August 20, RTO officers checked 1,392 drivers in the MMR on Monday, of whom 139 were found lacking the required knowledge of Marathi, while in other parts of Maharashtra, they checked 3,415 autorickshaw and taxi drivers and issued notices to 192 of them.
With Monday’s figures, RTO teams have checked 35,190 vehicles across Maharashtra, including 14,399 in the MMR, in the last five days and issued 4,729 notices statewide, including 2,239 in the MMR. The checking drive is part of the state government’s action against commercial passenger vehicle drivers who fail to meet the Marathi language requirement.
The government had earlier announced a month-long drive to check the working knowledge of Marathi among autorickshaw and taxi drivers.
