Mallanna Sagar canal suffered breach at Chellapur near Dubbak town, Siddipet district on Thursday
Siddipet: The Mallanna Sagar canal suffered a breach at Chellapur near Dubbak town on Thursday morning, raising concerns over irrigation supply in the region.
The breach is likely to affect irrigation water supply to parts of Dubbak constituency as well as parts of Rajanna-Sircilla constituency. As desilting of the Mallanna Sagar canals was not taken up over the past couple of years, weeds are said to have choked the water flow in the canals, resulting in multiple breaches during the Yasangi season.
Farmers in the Dubbak area demanded that the Irrigation Department restore the canal breach without delay, stating that any disruption in water supply to paddy fields at this stage would result in heavy losses. The paddy crop has reached the maturing stage, with the harvesting season set to commence in April. Farmers urged officials to restore water supply without interruption and called on the government to take up desilting and lining works of canals, along with works on distributary and sub-canals, before the onset of the monsoon.
