Hyderabad: `Mama come back with a trophy’. This was a request from her son Izhaan. Mama Sania Mirza obliged her son with her 43rd career doubles title when she and Shuai Zhang of China won the women’s doubles title in the WTA 500 Ostrava Open tennis tournament in Ostrava, Czech Republic on Sunday.
Sania and Zhang shocked third seeds Kaitlyn Christian USA) and Erin Routliffe (New Zealand) 6-3, 6-2 in the final
“This victory is special! Though this is my 43rd career doubles title win, it is the first WTA 500 title that I have won after becoming a mother!”, said the 34-year-old from Ostrava.
Izhaan did not accompany her mother to Ostrava and stayed back with his aunt Anam and uncle Asad in Chicago, USA. “My son who is away from me and in Chicago with Anam and Asad for the last two weeks, said to me this morning : ‘Mama come back with a trophy’. And I’m happy I could win this for him!”.
This is Sania’s first title at the 500 level (second overall) post maternity break. Earlier in the semifinals, Sania and Zhang beat Makoto Nononmiya and Eri Hozumi.
The 34-year-old Hyderabadi was runners-up at the WTA 250 Cleveland event in the USA last month with Christina McHale. Partnering with Coco Vandeweghe, Sania lost in the first round of the US Open.
