Hyderabad: A 19 year-old student, pursuing a course in multimedia, who posed as a woman and collected nude videos and pictures of young girls after befriending them on Instagram to later blackmail them, was arrested here.
According to the Hyderabad cybercrime police, Palakurthi Ajay (19) of Dilsukhnagar and native of Warangal, befriended a minor girl a few days posing as a woman on Instagram. Ajay then conned the victim saying he knows a rich man who spends lavishly on women and girls and provided the details of Instagram account of one ‘rafipasha’.
The victim entered into converstaions with the account of ‘rafipasha’ which was actually managed by Ajay himself. He asked the victim to share some nude pictures of her, which she did. Later, he asked her to send a nude video also.
When the victim brought this to the notice of Ajay though his account maintained as a woman, the suspect promised to mediate with ‘rafipasha’ and asked her to send him the video and Rs 3,000. “Believing him, the victim sent Rs 3,000 but she was asked to pay another Rs 6,000,” said the Cybercrime officials.
Unable to pay the money, the victim approached the police and narrated her experience. After tracking the accounts, the police nabbed Ajay on Thursday.
Based on a complaint, the police booked a case against Ajay under various Sections of the IT Act, Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act and arrested him.
The police who seized the mobile phone of Ajay found that he was maintaining seven Instagram and four Facebook accounts and was in touch with several young girls. “His modus operandi appears to pose as a woman and send friend request to young girls and befriend them. He then extorts money after collecting their nude videos. We are trying to figure out how many more girls he threatened after collecting their photographs, videos and extorted money,” said the police.
The police produced him before court and will seek his custody to probe the case further.
