Hyderabad: A complaint was lodged with the cybercrime police in Rachakonda, after a man allegedly received threatening messages on his mobile phone in the name of Maoists.
Police sources said the man, a resident of Ramanthapur, was receiving messages from an unknown number claiming to be from Maoists and demanding Rs 5 lakh. They asked him to transfer the money into a bitcoin wallet. When the complainant did not respond, they sent a threatening message saying if the amount was not deposited, they would kill his family.
Based on the complaint, the cybercrime police have booked a case and started investigation. They are investigating if those known to the complainant had threatened him for money or with any other malicious intention. The mobile phone records are being verified.
