Hanamkonda: Standing against the common practice of political parties distributing freebies and cash to voters during elections, a man in Mupparam village of Dharmasagar mandal in the district said votes in his family were not for sale.
In the backdrop of the ongoing gram panchayat elections, the man, Matangi Jaipal of SC Colony in the village, wrote a thought-provoking message on his house compound wall saying “Votes in our house are not for sale”. He further wrote “We want development, that’s why we will not sell our votes and we will not lose our right to question”, alongside a portrait of Dr BR Ambedkar on the wall.
Jaipal also wrote an Ambedkar quote that read, “I did not give my people a sword, but I gave them the right to vote as a weapon. Whether you fight and become kings or sell your votes and become slaves is in your hands,” prompting everyone to reflect.
Jaipal’s action has become a topic of debate among villagers, who were discussing that the awareness shown by him should spread among all voters and that they should not cast their votes by taking money. Dharmasagar mandal goes to polls in the second phase.
