Khammam: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has indicated that the upcoming winter season could see above-normal temperatures, roughly 4–5 degrees Celsius higher than usual, due to prevailing atmospheric and regional weather patterns. Signs of elevated temperatures are already emerging across the State.
Several parts of Telangana recorded above-normal maximum temperatures on Friday, with Manuguru in Kothagudem district recording the highest at 37 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature recorded at the same location on the corresponding day last year was 35 degrees Celsius.
According to officials, the average maximum temperature in October is 33 degrees Celsius. The highest maximum temperature recorded in the State during the month was 39.7 degrees Celsius at Kattangoor in Nalgonda district on October 17, 2017.
Gollapalle in Jagtial district, Gurrampode in Nalgonda district, Mamda in Nirmal district and Chivvemla in Suryapet district recorded maximum temperatures of 36.9 degrees Celsius during the day. The maximum temperatures recorded at these places on the corresponding day last year were 34.8, 35, 35 and 35 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The rise in maximum temperatures during the second week of October has caused discomfort among residents and coincided with a surge in viral fever cases across rural and urban areas of Khammam district.
According to officials, patients with fever, colds, coughs, body aches and headaches have been visiting government and private hospitals in large numbers. A door-to-door fever survey conducted by the district Medical and Health Department identified thousands of affected individuals in the first week of October.
Patients from Khammam and neighbouring districts, including Suryapet, Nalgonda, Mahabubabad and Kothagudem, have also been arriving at the Government General Hospital in Khammam.
Hospital Superintendent Dr Narender said fever cases had increased by 10–20 per cent due to weather changes, while the number of outpatients had also risen. The hospital currently had 20 fever patients in its wards, including four who had tested positive for dengue.
Dengue and malaria test kits, medicines and doctors were available in sufficient quantities, and there was no shortage, he said. The department was prepared to handle the situation effectively even if fever cases increased further.
