Hyderabad: The maximum permissible speed on the Godavari railway bridge located between Mancherial and Peddampet section has been increased from 50 kmph to 100 kmph to provide better transport services to passengers. This is first time in South Central Railway (SCR) limits that a train will be permitted to operate at 100 kmph speed on a ballasted deck bridge of over one km length.
The stretch between Mancherial and Peddampet covering a distance of nine km is part of the Golden Diagonal (Grand Trunk) route of Kazipet and Balharshah section, which is a gateway to Southern region from the North.
On the nine km critical stretch, there are seven minor bridges and this crucial bridge of 1.2 km bridge across River Godavari. This section has several coal, cement and thermal plants. In order to ease congestion and considering its importance, a third line was successfully completed in 2018.
Since then, the maximum permissible speed in the section between Mancherial and Peddampet was 80 kmph, while the maximum speed over the 1.2 km long Godavari Bridge was 50 kmph.
To double the speed on this major bridge, SCR took up major works including welding all the long weld rails along the bridge, providing Switch Expansion Joint (SEJ) on both sides of the bridge approaches, strengthening the track formation by adding 120 wagons of ballast.
Subsequently, Track Recording Cars (TRC) and Oscillation Monitoring System (OMS) tests were conducted successfully on the bridge to ensure there are no defects. Simultaneously, the temporary speed restrictions along the third line between Mancherial to Peddampet were also attended to and the speed was enhanced from 80 kmph to 100 kmph over this section.
These works will help in improved train operations in the Kazipet and Balharshah section, which is a busy stretch with passenger and freight trains operated at full capacity. SCR General Manager Gajanan Mallya complimented the engineering team which completed these works. He said enhancement of speed on the 1.2 km long bridge will ease congestion in train operations, besides aiding in comfortable travel for passengers.
