Medak: Additional Collector Medak Ramesh said that Medak district has completed the paddy procurement of Vanakalam season thus becoming the first district in the State 15 days before the schedule.
During a meeting with officials on Friday, the Additional Collector said that they have closed down 378 paddy procurement centers opened to buy the paddy for the season. Saying that they had opened the procurement centers on November 2, he said that they had purchased 3,86,833 tonnes of paddy worth Rs 758.19 crore from 74,902 farmers during one and half months. Ramesh said that they have deposited Rs 547 crore in the accounts of 57,173 farmers so far. Sating that still Rs 211 crore is due payment to 17,729 farmers, he said that they will deposit the amount once the particulars were updated on the tab and upon receiving the acknowledgment from the millers.
In view of increased paddy cultivation in the district this year, Ramesh said that they have roped in the services of tractors in addition to lorries for the transportation of paddy. To address the shortage of Hamalis, the Additional Collector said that they have brought them from Bihar state. He has thanked the officials, elected representatives, millers and farmers for working collectively to complete the procurement within 45 days. However, he has called upon the farmers to cultivate alternative crops by quitting the paddy cultivation during the Yasangi this year. Saying that the switching to alternative crops cultivation will make the soils fertile, Ramesh suggested the farmers approach the agriculture officials for suggestions on this.
