Medak: Medak Police have cracked the case of the brutal rape and murder of a tribal woman who was found unconscious near the Edupayala temple on October 10. The woman, a mother of five, succumbed to her injuries while being shifted to Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad the same day.
Superintendent of Police D V Srinivas Rao, producing the accused before the media on Tuesday, said the culprit, identified as Megavath Fakir Nayak (36), a resident of Ambujiguda Thanda in Vatpally mandal of Sangareddy district, was a habitual offender with multiple criminal cases against him in the erstwhile Medak district.
The SP said Fakir Nayak lured the victim, who was waiting at an adda, on October 10 by offering her work. He then took her to an isolated spot near the temple, tied her to a tree, raped her, and later smashed her head with a boulder before fleeing. The accused left his clothes near Medak church and slept there after the crime.
Following a complaint, Kulcharam police registered a case and launched a manhunt. Based on CCTV footage, the police tracked and arrested the accused near Medak church on Tuesday.
Srinivas Rao said that the accused had earlier raped and killed another woman under Medak Town Police Station limits, and also faced charges of attempted rape and other serious crimes in the district.
In a chilling revelation, police said Fakir Nayak committed the recent rape and murder just three days after a Medak court convicted him to life imprisonment in another similar case. The accused reportedly committed the second crime before the conviction order could take effect.
The SP said multiple teams comprising two DSPs, three CIs, seven SIs and other staff worked to crack the case swiftly. He commended the police personnel for their prompt investigation.
