Hyderabad: Dr P Raghu Ram, Director, KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, inaugurated the ninth edition of the annual Congress of Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSICON 2021). Being held at Kolkata, the event was attended physically by 250 delegates, whereas 800 participants joined the meet virtually.
Delivering his address, Dr Raghu Ram hoped that by next year, the association would evolve into a truly multidisciplinary organisation with integration of breast radiologists and breast pathologists in its fold, who are, in fact, the “eyes and ears” to a breast surgeon. He also hoped that ABSI would encourage the concept of breast care nurses, who should play a pivotal role in supporting, comforting and reassuring patients and their relatives. This aspect of breast cancer care, which is hugely deficient in India, must be given as much importance as is given to assessment and treatment, he said.
