Hyderabad: Micron India is actively involved in several design and R&D programmes in the semiconductor space, in line with the US-headquartered Micron Technology’s global R&D strategy and goals, providing design and product engineering functions for next-generation memory and high-value storage solutions.
The company identifies core problems that industries face across verticals and provides them the needed solutions.
Anand Ramamoorthy, MD, Micron India, told Telangana Today in an exclusive interview, “We are constantly growing in India. In terms of ownership of projects and R&D, patent activity, number of programmes and projects we own and the talent pool we have, India is seeing positive outcomes across metrics.”
“We will remain aligned with Micron’s global technology goals and strategies by being involved in active modelling early in the design cycle, artificial intelligence and data science, in order to be able to predict things earlier and faster across all verticals,” he added.
Micron India is adding competencies in memory design functions, data science, smart manufacturing, IT, artificial intelligence, and product engineering. The company is looking to add 1,000 employees in the next 12 months and is going to actively fill these openings.
Ramamoorthy further emphasised, “India’s strength is scalable talent. Where else can you go and hire 1,000 talented and seasoned professionals in 12 months.”
Talent pool
“We will be a 3,000-member workforce by the end of the calendar year 2021 including full-time employees and contractors. We are on track to reach 5,000 in two years. Our growth is hinged on active hiring from top colleges/institutes of the country,” he said.
“Despite Covid, we added 1,200 professionals in this calendar year so far. From over 20 plus per cent in the last quarter, about 40-50 per cent of our staff is working from the office this quarter. The outcomes are positive. We do not miss even a single deliverable for our global commitment,” Micron India MD added.
To meet the skill requirement in India, Micron India through its University Research Alliance (URAM), tied up with top research institutes & colleges, curriculum engagement and extended six-month internships (pre-placement offers). The first year of URAM has just completed.
The company also takes up job rotation for engineers in different functions upstream and downstream, giving them the flexibility. “At Micron, you can join as a layout designer and can become a memory designer in 3-4 years’ time,” he added.
In terms of startup engagement in India, he said, Micron engages startups in the areas of design, layout, and verification functions.
When asked if Micron sees opportunities in areas such as aerospace and defence, Ramamoorthy said, “The central government is encouraging indigenisation in aerospace and defence. There is a lot of momentum in this space. Micron is enabling design vendors both in India and worldwide, which cater to avionics and defence suppliers. We are enabling the ecosystem in this sector, and we are keeping a close watch on it.”
