Hyderabad: Mild tension prevailed in parts of the city following the visit of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, as police detained leaders of unemployed student unions from early Monday morning.
Police took Kodangal Ravi, a student union leader residing in Ashok Nagar, into custody at around 5 am.
Officials reportedly acted on the apprehension that protests could be staged during Rahul Gandhi’s tour.
Unemployed students, however, strongly condemned the action, alleging that the detentions were illegal and carried out without prior notice.
They said they intended to voice their demands peacefully but were prevented from doing so through what they described as arbitrary detentions.
Security was tightened in several areas of the city in view of the political visit.
Authorities have not yet issued a detailed statement on the detentions.
