Hyderabad: In the wake of heavy rains in catchment areas of Krishna River in Karnataka, Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy on Friday instructed the officials of Wanaparthy district to remain on high alert. He instructed them to constantly monitor the situation and evacuate people residing in low-lying areas if needed.

In a statement, the Minister said 50 gates of Jurala project have been lifted and over five lakh cusecs of water was being discharged downstream. He feared that the inflows could cross the seven lakh cusecs mark. He suggested that the sarpanches and local government authorities should alert people from villages which are likely to get inundated due to flood waters and advise them to shift to safer places. He also asked them to make all arrangements for evacuation.
