Hyderabad: Oxygen is the need of the hour right now. There are numerous requests from Covid patients and relatives every day for oxygen concentrators.

So, No Food Waste’s initiative ‘Mission Oxygen Support’ has come as a breather for many in Hyderabad. The NGO is providing oxygen concentrators for free for Covid positive patients. All one need is a prescription from a doctor for use of oxygen concentrator, reference of relatives and a copy of Aadhaar card. This is to verify the requirements.

The initiative that kick-started on May 19 has seen an immense response from the people. “Breathe India identified a few NGOs through whom they wanted to help the needy, and No Food Waste is one of them. Based on the prescription of the doctor, we are delivering oxygen concentrators for three or more days on rental basis. We later verify if they need it for more days or we take it back, sanitise it and make it ready for the next patient,” said K Venkata Murali, Telangana Director, No Food Waste.

The NGO is a food collection organisation, collecting the surplus food from weddings, parties and other food sources to feed the needy and hungry people. The initiative was started in Coimbatore on October 16, 2014, on World Food Day with the mission to end food waste and hunger to make the world “hunger free”.

“I began the operations in Telangana. During the last lockdown, we served food to around 5,000 people every day and delivered over 50,000 grocery kits. We also launched an ambulance service that attends three calls per day within the 20km radius. This is a completely free service to help the needy shift from hospital to hospital or for shifting of the body. We also helped many elders get their vaccinations,” shared Murali.
