Hyderabad: BRS MLC K Kavitha has called on the BJP to spell out its stance on the Backward Classes (BC) caste census in Telangana. She criticised the Congress government for failing to honour its promises to the BC community under the Kamareddy BC Declaration.

During a meeting with representatives of Telangana Kummari Sangam on Thursday, Kavitha pointed out the plight of people depending on caste-based occupations for livelihood and accused the Congress government of neglecting their welfare.

She questioned about unfulfilled promises, including the Kamareddy Declaration, and the delay in implementing 42 per cent reservations for BCs in local body elections.

“The Congress government is harassing those eking livelihood from caste-based occupations, while ignoring their development and welfare,” she remarked.

Kavitha also questioned the BJP’s silence on these issues. “Does the BJP not value BC representation? Why is it not pressuring the Congress government to fulfill its commitments?” she asked. She urged the BJP-led central government to legislate a national caste census. “If the Centre truly cares for BCs, it must take decisive steps toward a caste census. Its inaction reflects a lack of commitment to BCs,” she added.

Leaders from various BC organisations, including United Phule Front and Telangana Salivahana Sangh, also attended the meeting.
